I made a gun-fire special effect (must get some stills) using a party popper... It took about half hour to make, and et up, then it lasted less than a second! Looked pretty effective though!

Sounds fun, Im not sure what your point is, but with all due respect designing a modeling a large head, and then making negative moulds of it, and casting this in latex, painting, adding hair and teeth, then fashioning some device for revolving eyes to look left and right, and fitting them, is likely to take a little longer than putting a party popper into a gun.
good luck

Ooh missus! Rich was only relaying his experience - granted, it's much less involved than your project, but that's no reason to kick sand in his face. Chill out dude.
Anyway though, I am interested to know what your above mentioned "large, modelled cast-in-latex from negative moulds, painted, hair, teethed, with fashioned device for revolving eyes to look left and right" head was used for...
sorry Rich, thought you were being sarcastic.
I guess I have too much time on my hannds :-)
Anyway, its a mask/head that gets blown up at the end of my super8 film called 'Circus of the Damned'.
Crazy how much time some things take to make/do.
And are you pleased with the result - does it match the head of your actor?
That [exploding head] sounds like the kind of thing lots of people here would cream their pants over. Why not post some pics?
ha ha! Aye, its a pretty good mask!
I will post pics here when I can/have them, and a low down of how the effect was done.
Its pretty involved.
Why dont you put up some stills of your rain effect?
Cheers
